Plum Boards / West Coast

Every practice begins with the ground.

You have always wanted to practice in the places that move you, on the beach at low tide, in the garden after rain, on the deck as the sun comes up, and now there is steady ground waiting wherever you go: set down your board, find level, find stillness.

The artists

Art you stand behind, and on.

Each board begins as a finished piece by an artist who knows this coast. We hang the original beside the board it became, because the artist is part of every practice that happens on it. Their name travels with every board, and every board supports their work.

Mackenzie Duncan

Working title: Morning Fence. Black and white photograph.

Early light finds a spider web on an old fence: patient work, made one thread at a time, and gone by noon. Mackenzie caught it before it went. It is a good thing to look at before a morning practice.

Mackenzie's bio goes here: where they shoot, what draws them to it, and a line in their own words.

Working title: Inlet. Aerial photograph.

From above, the coast is a series of meetings: ocean meets rock, rock meets forest, white water finds its way in and out again. Jeremy sees it from the air. Your practice can be a meeting place too.

Why Plum(B)

Plumb: true, steady, upright.

Carpenters call a wall plumb when it stands perfectly true. They once checked it with a plumb board, a simple plank with a weighted line hanging still against it.

It is what we hope for in a practice, too: rooted, upright, honest. On the floor these boards lie level. On the wall they hang plum(b).
